Group Therapy

Group therapy is a form of psychotherapy where one or two trained therapists meet with several clients at the same time, providing a supportive environment to share experiences, learn from one another, and build skills that improve emotional wellbeing.

Groups can address trauma, grief, anxiety, depression, ADHD, PTSD, and many other emotional or behavioural challenges.

Is This Relevant to My Concerns

Group work supports many goals.

Many people wonder whether group therapy is the right fit for their needs. Group work can be especially helpful for individuals who want to:

Reduce feelings of isolation

Hearing others describe similar experiences can offer relief, validation, and a sense of belonging.

Improve coping strategies

Group members learn practical tools for managing emotions, stress, anxiety, or unwanted behavioural patterns.

Strengthen communication & interpersonal skills

Groups provide a safe space to practice boundaries, assertiveness, emotional expression, and active listening.

Process trauma, grief, or difficult experiences

Sharing experiences with others who understand can be grounding and healing.

Build insight and self awareness

Group conversations help individuals recognize patterns in their thinking and behaviour that may limit progress.

Gain motivation and accountability

Members support one another in making meaningful changes and staying on track with personal goals.

If you are looking for a supportive environment, want to learn from others, or want to work on relationship patterns, group therapy may be a valuable option for you.

How Group Therapy Works

Group therapy typically includes six to twelve participants who meet regularly with one or two therapists. Groups may be open (ongoing) or closed (a set number of sessions), depending on the program.
During sessions, therapists guide discussion, facilitate activities, introduce therapeutic tools, and ensure a safe environment.
The structure is collaborative. You decide how much you want to participate. Listening alone can be helpful, especially early on.

In each session, you will have opportunities to:

1

Share experiences at your own pace

2

Listen to others facing similar challenges

3

Practice new skills in a supportive setting

4

Receive feedback from therapists and peers

5

Explore patterns in thoughts, behaviours, and relationships

Is Group Therapy Safe?

Groups are built on confidentiality, respect, and emotional safety. Therapists establish clear guidelines at the beginning of each program to ensure every member feels protected and valued.

Confidentiality

Members agree not to share personal information discussed in sessions outside the group

Professional facilitation

Trained therapists guide the process, monitor group dynamics, and intervene when needed to maintain a supportive atmosphere.

Clear boundaries

Members follow behavioural guidelines that protect the emotional wellbeing of the group as a whole.
